The Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), France’s gambling regulator, has imposed a record EUR 800,000 fine on SPS Betting, the operator behind the Unibet brand in France. While SPS Betting estimated that over 4,500 player accounts were impacted, ANJ put the figure at 6,754, with the belief that the actual number of players who used the betting services should not exceed 100 individuals.

Considering the severity of the violations, the prolonged duration of the malfunction, and the inadequacy of the initial remedial actions, the ANJ decided to levy the substantial fine. SPS Betting did not contest the findings, acknowledging the gravity of the breach. The company had previously been fined twice in France, with a recent violation linked to exceeding France’s return to player (RTP) limit of 85%.

Unibet has two months to appeal the ANJ’s decision and is mandated to display a message regarding the penalty on its homepage as part of the enforcement measures. In January, Unibet faced scrutiny in the Netherlands for attempting to block lawsuits from former players who lost money to the company before regulation in the country.
