If these bills are enacted, Maryland will join Mississippi in banning sweepstakes and other online gambling games that offer real-money rewards. Violators in Maryland could face a maximum fine of $100,000 and up to 3 years in prison.

Opposition and Advocacy

The Social and Promotional Games Association (SPGA), a group that represents sweepstakes operators, has strongly opposed the bans, calling them a “dangerous overreach.” The SPGA advocates for sensible regulation and taxation of the industry, stating that its members would comply with regulations if a proper framework is in place.

While New Jersey has proposed regulating sweepstakes instead of banning them, there are conflicting proposals within the state seeking a complete ban on the industry.
