KSA Study Reveals Majority of Gambling Revenue in the Netherlands Comes from 1% of Players
New Report Examines Risky Behavior and Intervention Strategies
The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has recently released a new study shedding light on the country’s gambling industry. The report highlights that a significant portion of the gross gambling revenue (GGR) in the Netherlands is generated by just 1% of players, who are often at high risk of harmful gambling practices.
The study, commissioned by the KSA, analyzed data collected from 25 licensed operators between October 2023 and September 2024. The findings revealed that 43% of the country’s GGR comes from accounts of only 1% of players, who incur losses exceeding €2,500 ($2,600) per month.
Moreover, the report indicated that over 10,000 accounts per month accumulate losses equivalent to the median net income in the Netherlands, which is approximately $2,600. The average monthly loss for Dutch players was estimated to be around $150, with 68% of accounts losing $108 or less each month.
Notably, young adults aged between 18 and 23 were identified as the most vulnerable group, with their monthly losses averaging around $66. The KSA also discovered that 1% of young players account for a third of the total GGR generated by this demographic.
Focus on Preventing Harmful Gambling Practices
With the concerning data in hand, the KSA is determined to take action to prevent harmful gambling practices in the country. The authority plans to encourage operators to be more proactive in identifying and addressing signs of harm among players.
According to KSA regulations, operators are required to intervene when necessary with appropriate measures. However, there are inconsistencies in how operators report these interventions, making it challenging to determine the optimal timing for intervention.
The KSA emphasized the importance of tracking players’ betting patterns across multiple operators to gain better insights. As nearly half of players in the legal market hold accounts with multiple bookmakers, this approach could provide a more comprehensive understanding of player behavior.
Paving the Way for Change
As part of its efforts to combat problem gambling, the KSA intends to use the study’s findings as a foundation for new regulations. The authority aims to promote transparency among operators regarding intervention thresholds and methods, ultimately enhancing supervision standards and reducing the prevalence of harmful gambling practices.
These potential regulatory changes come at a crucial time as the Netherlands prepares to open a new gambling harm treatment center in Amsterdam. The KSA is also exploring the possibility of implementing stricter intervention rules by revising the definitions of when operators must take action to protect players.
By addressing the issues highlighted in the study, the KSA aims to create a safer and more responsible gambling environment in the Netherlands for all players.
