Oklahoma’s Tribal Nations Boost State Economy with $23.4 Billion Impact
A recent economic study has revealed that Oklahoma’s tribal nations made a significant impact on the state’s economy in 2023, contributing a total of $23.4 billion. This marks a substantial increase in economic activity compared to previous years, showcasing the growing influence of tribal nations in the region.
Record Economic Growth and Job Opportunities
The findings, unveiled at the Oklahoma History Center, were the result of research conducted by United for Oklahoma in partnership with the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association. According to the report, the $23.4 billion figure represents the largest growth seen in any reporting period to date. Between fiscal years 2019 and 2023, tribal economic activity surged by $4.9 billion, nearly doubling the increase observed from 2017 to 2019.
Moreover, tribal nations have had a significant impact on job creation across the state. Last year, tribal governments and businesses employed over 55,600 individuals, supporting a total of 140,000 jobs overall. These positions, held by both tribal citizens and non-tribal residents, generated more than $7.8 billion in wages and benefits for Oklahoma workers, underscoring the vital role of tribes in the state’s economy.
Investing in Infrastructure and Public Services
Matt Morgan, the head of the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association, emphasized the crucial role that tribal businesses and services play in rural economies, where job opportunities are often limited. He highlighted that tribal nations not only provide employment but also invest in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and community projects throughout the state, demonstrating their commitment to improving the quality of life for all Oklahomans.
The study further highlighted the substantial financial support provided by tribal nations in key public sectors in 2023. Tribal governments allocated $582 million towards health services, catering to over 3.5 million patient visits by Oklahomans. Additionally, through gaming agreements granting tribes exclusive rights to operate certain types of gaming in the state, Oklahoma received $208 million in exclusivity fees, a 36% increase since 2019.
Of this amount, over $177 million was earmarked for public education, bringing the total tribal funding for education to $351 million last year when combined with other related contributions. Dr. Kyle Dean, an economics professor and director of the Center for Native American and Urban Studies at Oklahoma City University, conducted the economic impact study.
Dr. Dean’s research, which involved data from 19 tribes in Oklahoma, highlighted the significant role that tribal nations play in bolstering the state’s economy. The study underscored how their contributions help build resilient communities and foster a stronger, more inclusive state economy.
