VGCCC Reminds Venues to Comply with Trading Hours During Holidays
Two Major Holidays Approach
As Easter and ANZAC Day draw near, the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has issued a stern reminder to state pubs and clubs to adhere to holiday trading hours. The authority emphasized that non-compliance could result in fines and other penalties.
Suzy Neilan, the VGCCC’s new chief executive officer, highlighted that last year, 14 venue operators were fined a total of AUD 195,000 for violating trading hours regulations during the holidays. Additionally, four operators received censure warnings for similar offenses.
The Good Friday, ANZAC Day, and Christmas Day public holidays are crucial periods during which clubs are required to adhere to specific restrictions. While acknowledging that some operators may be unfamiliar with the regulations, Neilan urged them to acquaint themselves with the rules to avoid penalties.
“With Good Friday approaching, I strongly urge venues to ensure they understand and comply with their license obligations and only operate poker machines during permitted hours,” stated Suzy Neilan, CEO of VGCCC.
Since August 2024, new laws in Australia mandate that venues close their poker machine areas between 4 am and 10 am daily.
VGCCC Previously Fined Violators
In past instances, the VGCCC fined the Melbourne Racing Club AUD 60,000 for allowing the use of three poker machines before noon on Good Friday. The implicated properties included Steeples, The Coach and Horses, and Peninsula Club.
Moreover, Hoppers Crossing Club Limited faced a $30,000 fine for breaching trading restrictions on Good Friday and ANZAC Day. The Sale & District Greyhound Racing Club received a censure for similar violations on ANZAC Day.
Neilan elaborated that the severity of violations determines the penalties imposed by the VGCCC. Factors considered include the duration customers were allowed to play outside permitted hours, revenue generated during that time, and the property’s compliance history.
